1000 Bottle of Beer.com is a personal beer adventure - a 'Tasty Experience' if you will.   My goal is to sample 1000 bottles of beer over the next 2-3 years and have a resource for people to read a description of beers they might like to try.  Of course, these are my own personal opinion, and my palate is fickle as the next person's.  Sorry if you don't agree with some of my tasting notes, but they are what they are... Cheers! - Oliver in Portland

Tasted on: 6/7/2008 Bottle and fresh glass of Brouwerij Van den Bossche Buffalo Belgian Stout
Brewery: Brouwerij Van den Bossche
Location: Sint-Lievens-Esse, Belgium
Beer Name: Buffalo Belgian Stout
Beer Style: Belgian Dark Strong Ale
ABV: 9%
IBU:Unknown
Tasty Notes: Dark brown color with a medium to thick light-tan head. Aroma is a bit malty, yeasty and dark roasted grains. Flavor has a characteristically Belgian quality (the yeast?) over a lighter stout. Very well balanced, wonderfully drinkable for a stout. A bit on the grainy side, but with no astringency, lightly sugary. Nice risidual fruty finish.

Tasted on: 6/6/2008 Bottle and fresh glass of Huisbrouwerij Klein Duimpje Porter
Brewery: Huisbrouwerij Klein Duimpje
Location: Hillegom, Netherlands
Beer Name: Porter
Beer Style: English Porter
ABV: 5.5%
IBU:Unknown
Tasty Notes: Dark brown hue with a light brown medium head. The aroma is fruity - like a dopple-bock. Rich caramal, dark cherries and a touch of molasses. Flavor is somewhere between a porter and a dopple-bock for me. A bit on the sweeter, fruitier side, but I like that! Very nice creamy full bodited malty porter from the Netherlands.

Tasted on: 6/6/2008 Bottle and fresh glass of Mt. Shasta Brewing Mountain High
Brewery: Mt. Shasta Brewing
Location: Weed, California
Beer Name: Mountain High
Beer Style: IPA
ABV: 7%
IBU:Unknown
Tasty Notes: Golden to amber in color with a thin light tan head. The aroma is biscuity, malty and floral hops. Flavor is almost tart with a hop tang. Decent bigger IPA, though the hops seem a but unremarkable compared with so many in your face citrus and piney IPAs these day.

Tasted on: 6/6/2008 Bottle and fresh glass of Erie Brewing Company Railbender Ale
Brewery: Erie Brewing Company
Location: Erie, Pennsylvania
Beer Name: Railbender Ale
Beer Style: Scottish Ale
ABV: 6.8%
IBU:Unknown
Tasty Notes: Clean copper color with a thin off-white head. The aroma is sweet - almost like kool-aid or bubblegum - with some stone fruit like qualities, and maybe a touch of caramel. Flavor is on the lightly malty side, but not as sweet as it smells. By any standard palatable, but not notable or outstanding on any facet. Well made solid Scottish style beer.

Brewery: Erie Brewing Company
Location: Erie, Pennsylvania
Beer Name: Presque Isle Pilsner
Beer Style: Pilsner
ABV: 4.2%
IBU:Unknown
Tasty Notes: Light straw color with a thin white head. The aroma is skunked - and thankfully light! Flavor is very light and almost crisp, but getting past the aroma is a bit difficult. Over time, the skunky aroma fades and you are left with a very light but overall pleasant pilsner. Bottle of Bud anyone?!

ABV: 5.5%

Tasty Notes: Light copper color with a medium to thin light tan head. Aroma is citrus hops, piney, touch of caramel. The flavor is lightly grainy, with some roasty and light caramel notes, and a decent NorthWest hop presence to keep it pretty dry. Finishes hoppy, but not too crisp or bitter.

Tasty Notes: Amber to light brown hue with a thin ivory head. Sweet aroma - roasty, light caramel, and a touch of smoke. Flavor is lightly smokey, a touch of caramel, lightly sweet, but very well balanced. Very rich and creamy mouth for a beer under 5%.

Brewery: Avery Brewing
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Beer Name: Fourteen
Beer Style: Strong Ale
ABV: 9.46%
IBU:60
Tasty Notes: 'A very dark, different dry-hopped ale' on the bottle... Dark brown in color with a medium light-brown head. Aroma is resinous hops and caramel. Flavor is malty - caramel, light toffee, and a kind of wierd resiny hop combo. A decent beer, but a littly wierd on the palate being a pine-caramel combination. Finish lingers with both of these flavors battling as they subside...

Tasty Notes: Copper brown color with a medium to thick light tan head. Aroma is lightly sweet, a touch yeasty and a bit of toasted grains and caramel. Flavor is initially slightly sweet, then a touch of sour shows up quite quickly. Flavors of caramel, honey and the tart edge of pie cherries (though no cherry flavors are prevailent). Finish is clean, refreshing and leaves you longing for another taste.

Tasty Notes: Medium brown color with a medium to thin tan head. Aroma is roasted grains with a touch of caramel. Flavor is initially quite dry, crisp - followed by some roasted notes of grains and a hint of caramel, then immediately dries back out - slightly bitter finish.

Tasty Notes: Light straw color with a medium white head. Aroma is grassy, lightly floral, a touch spicy. The flavor is light - mild and well-balanced. Creamy mouthfeel, lightly fruity - almost apricots - with a dry but not crisp finish. Very enjoyable.

Tasty Notes: Light mahogany ruby color with a thin lihgt-tan head. Aroma is rich with raisins, prunes - big and sweet! Flavor is intense - sweet, caramelly honey with lots of stone fruits, and nectar. The oak comes through more toward the finish. Quite an exquisite finish to an otherwise absolutely fabulous birthday!

Tasty Notes: Crystal clear deep golden hue with a thin white head. Aroma is all hops, and nothing but the hops! Big amarillo citrus punch in the nose. Flavor is decidedly delicious. Big malty backbone - almost rich honey flavors - thn a big lemon zest fresh citrus finish - but not tart. A fine beer - well balanced while stilll giving us a great amarillo profile. Tasted at Birreria Paradiso in D.C.

Location: Milton, Delaware
Beer Name: Palo Santo Marron
Beer Style: Brown Ale aged in Palo Santo barrels
ABV: 12%

Tasty Notes: Deep dark brown mocha color with a thin dark-brown head. Aroma is lightly sweet, a touch vineous, with lots of figs/raising/prunes. Flavor is large with bits of toffee and dark caramel, dark cherries, raisins and prunes. Almost a bit of leather, maybe from the wood - which is very mild, especially compared to some fresh oak barrel aged beers. Finish is long and lingering (in a good way).

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Beer Name: 黑 (Black)
Beer Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 17.5%

Tasty Notes: Black. Thin dark brown head. Aromas are rich sweet dried prunes, coffee, leather, chocolate, raisins... WOW! Alcohol is there, but not aparent. Flavor is initially big black licorice, sweet dark chocolate, figs - no, scratch that - black strap molasses with raisin tar. Then finishing back into black licorice with a touch of astringency. This beer just doesn't finish! Roasted nuts, tobacco, leather, dark rum... should age well for 20+ years if anyone has the patience... Tasted May 21, 2008 - Bottle from John's Market Place in Portland.

Tasty Notes: Super dark mahogany brown bording on opaque with a thick brown head. Aroma is definitely belgian yeast - spicy, with some roasted dark grains, and licorice notes in the back. Flavor is a bit strange at first - almost like a clash of the flavors - roasted granis, astringency, sweet fruity phenols and a funky kind of dry finish. Interesting, but not hight on my list of must-have beers.

Brewery: Black Sheep
Location: Ripon, England
Beer Name: Monty Python's Holy Grail
Beer Style: ESB
ABV: 4.7%
IBU:Unknown
Tasty Notes: Light amber color with a thin creamy off-white head. Aroma is lightly sweet and floral - a touch of honeysuckle? Flavor has a touch of malt on the start, but falls quickly to a more flat bitter flavor. Lightly creamy mouth, some honey tangerine and roasted marshmallows try hard to peek through, but the dry hop presence overpowers in the end. Not as bad as I remember from the last time I had this, but still a dissapointed recipe in an otherwise well-made beer.

Tasty Notes: Amber color with a medium to thin ivory head. Aroma is big citrus resinous hops. Flavor is definitely more on the bitter than malty side - lots of hops in this beer - citrus orange and lemons, and a good malt presense - abiscuity, lightly roasty, but crispy sides of my tongue in the finish...

Tasty Notes: Deep garnet brown color with a thin sand-tan head. Aroma is rich figs and oak, with a touch of dark brown sugar and molasses. The flavor has a nice foward oak, enriching a very creamy, rich chewy, dark fruit beer. Not a super thick syrupy beer, but vdery larg and in charge on the flavor. Mission figs, dates, and a touch of black strap molasses. Nice lingering oaky finish. As it warmed, it developed an anise like flavor.

Tasty Notes: Golden hue with a thin white head. The aroma is somewhat fruity - like peaches or nectarines, but quite light. Flavor is initially lightly fruity, more like apricots, than dries out quite nicely. This is a superb (golden ale) ESB - a bit different but quite good.
